Bluetooth technology allows devices such as mobile phones, headsets, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and other mobile computers to communicate and send data to each other without the need for wires or cables. It sets a common standard for very small, low cost, low power radio technology suitable for short range Personal Area Network (PAN) applications.

Here is a brief overview:

• Bluetooth operates in the unlicensed ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) frequency band, 2.4 2.4835 GHz
• There are three classifications of transmission power:
  Class 1 - 100 mW, giving a 'typical range' of 100m
  Class 2 - 2.5 mW, giving a 'typical range' of 20m
  Class 3 - 1 mW, giving a 'typical range' of 10m. This is currently the most widely adopted classification.
• For the technically inclined, Bluetooth uses Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) to hop at up to 1600 hops/sec, amongst 79 channels, spaced at 1 MHz intervals.
• Bluetooth can transmit digital information at a maximum data rate of 723.2 kb/s and communicates speech at 64kb/s using Continuously Variable Slope Delta Modulation (CSVD).
• Bluetooth supports point-to-point wireless connections (cable replacement) and multipoint connections (local wireless networks).
• The latest version of the specification is 1.2. If you have equipment that is compliant with earlier versions you may experience some connectivity issues with newer devices.
